Vincent Ong has become the first Malaysian to reach the final of the International Chopin Piano Competition, and leaves Warsaw with fifth prize. A look at the pianist and what his result means for Malaysian music.

Every five years, the classical music world turns to Warsaw. The International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition, held since 1927, has launched careers that last for decades. This month, for the first time, a Malaysian stood on its final stage.

Who is Vincent Ong?

Vincent Ong is a Penang-born classical pianist who, at 24, became the first Malaysian finalist of the International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition. At the 19th edition in Warsaw, whose results were announced on 20 October 2025, he won fifth prize, shared with Poland’s Piotr Alexewicz, and a prize of €25,000. He studies at the Hanns Eisler School of Music in Berlin.

The road to Warsaw

The Chopin Competition is open to pianists aged 16 to 30 and is among the hardest in the world to enter. This year, 171 pianists reached the preliminary rounds. Only 11 made the final.

Ong arrived with a strong record. He won the International Taipei Maestro Piano Festival in 2019, placed sixth at the Singapore International Piano Competition in 2020, and took first prize at the International Robert Schumann Competition in Zwickau, Germany, in 2024.

In Warsaw he played on a Shigeru Kawai concert grand. In the final, held from 18 to 20 October, each pianist performed Chopin’s Polonaise-Fantasy and a concerto with orchestra.

The audience’s favourite, too

Ong did not only impress the jury. In the public vote for the Audience Award, he came second of all 11 finalists with more than 11,500 votes, behind only Poland’s own Piotr Alexewicz. For a pianist from a country with little presence at the competition until then, that was a striking show of support.

Why it matters for Malaysia

Malaysia has produced fine pianists before, but rarely on this stage. Ong’s result shows young Malaysian musicians that the top of the classical world is within reach, and it puts the country on the map for teachers, juries and audiences who follow the competition.

Alongside his studies, Ong also teaches piano at a district music school near Berlin. Asked about his future after Warsaw, he speaks of performing first and perhaps, one day, teaching more seriously.
